A Desert Dispatch; Tails from the not so old west...
Recently I was playing video poker at what was apparently the locals’ bar in a Nevada casino; this became obvious as the bartender seemed to know everyone there except for me.
The casino is located in the southern Nevada desert at the point where it meets California and Arizona. Sitting alone on the bank of the Colorado River there are no other establishments for miles, though the surrounding hills once held treasures of silver and gold, now they mostly produce an abundance of characters.
As I played, mostly to people watch (and free beer), I notice out of the corner of my eye a desert worn Old-Timer approaching. He sat with a gasp and a throat clearing cough just a few seats away.
The Bartender asked “you want the usual?”, “where’s the wife?”
“She’s been sick for eight days” was the Old-Timer’ reply. Thinking COVID, I instantly reviewed my seating options.
“Did you hear what happened to me?” the Old-Timer asked. With that there was a blur of activity. I wasn’t sure what the Old-Timer was doing. I desperately wanted to look, however that would have been obvious, not to say impolite.
“OMG!, OMG!, OMG!, OMG!” The Bartender just kept shouting OMG not OH MY GOD just the letters O-M-G.
What was it? What did she see? My brain was in overload. Logically I thought skin cancer, maybe his nose or part of an ear. I desperately tried to mind my own business.
Then the Bartender asked “couldn’t they sew em back on?”
“They couldn’t find anything” the Old-Timer replied.
“Does it sometimes feel like you still have them?” the Bartender inquires.
“Yep… sometimes” the Old-Timer answers.
“How did it happen?” the Bartender finally asked.
“Fireworks” says the Old-Timer
“OMG what kind of fireworks?” the Bartender probs.
“Really good ones, the homemade kind!” the Old-Timer responds with a laugh. He finishes his beer and walks off.
This may not be your typical Thanksgiving story; however we all have many things to be thankful for. Some of us, like the old timer are especially thankful for surviving poor decisions, mostly intact!
On behalf of myself and the Fire Goddess Have a Happy Turkey Day!
Happy Thanksgiving to you.🥃🦃
